SUMMARY:Crafting an AI Policy for Your Public Library: Practical\, Ethical\, Adaptable
DESCRIPTION:\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\nAs AI tools become more integrated into
library work\, clear and thoughtful policies are essential. In this
session\, we will hear from Adam Di Filippe\, Director of the Holderness
Free Library in New Hampshire. Adam will share how he developed one of the
first public library AI policies in the state\; designed to be practical\,
readable\, and patron facing. \n\nThis presentation will walk through key
 components including privacy\, bias\, transparency\, staff training\, and
accountability\, along with real-world applications and considerations for
working with vendors. Attendees will gain a flexible framework they can
adapt to their own institutions\, along with strategies for keeping
policies relevant as technology continues to evolve. \n\n\n\nAbout the
Presenter: \n\nAdam Di Filippe is the Director of the Holderness Free
Library in Holderness\, New Hampshire\, where he has served for eight
years. He holds an MSLS and has been an active presenter and workshop
facilitator with the New Hampshire State Library and the New Hampshire
Library Association. Working at a small\, rural library with a lean staff
has shaped his approach to library service: practical\, resourceful\, and
deeply community-focused. Over the past year\, Adam developed one of the
first AI policies created by a public library in New Hampshire\, built to
be readable\, adaptable\, and grounded in the values of intellectual
freedom\, privacy\, and equity. His work reflects a broader commitment to
helping small libraries navigate big technological changes without losing
sight of the people they serve.\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the MHLS 2026
Horizon Series: Navigating AI in Libraries: Skills\, Tools\, Strategy
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way our communities find\,
trust\, and use information. This three-part speaker series helps library
staff and directors move beyond the hype to develop real understanding and
practical approaches. Start by building essential information literacy
skills for an AI-driven world\, then explore how AI can be used in everyday
library work\, and finally learn how to create thoughtful\, flexible
policies to guide its use. Whether you’re curious\, cautious\, or already
experimenting\, this series will help you make sense of AI and decide how
it fits into your library’s future.

SUMMARY:Minimum Standards for Libraries - Policy Development for Public Usage of Library Space and Meeting Rooms
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\n\nAs libraries are increasingly referenced as
"third places\," it's important to have policies in place to guide the use
of meeting rooms and other spaces within our buildings. Article VI of the
Library Bill of Rights states that such facilities should be made available
to the public served by the given library "on an equitable basis\,
regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups
requesting their use." Developing these policies will help library staff
and volunteers uphold the First Amendment and the Library Bill of Rights\,
while ensuring that access to library spaces is provided in a fair\,
 equitable\, and consistent manner. \n\nPresenters: \n\nErika Jenns\,
she/her \n\nErika Jenns is the Assistant Director - Director of
Librarianship at the Southern Tier Library System (STLS) and has been
working in libraries for over 10 years. At STLS\, she provides support to
48 public libraries across a five-county region in Upstate New York. Erika
works with libraries on policy development\, library administration and
governance\, and funding. She also coordinates professional development
opportunities for all library system members. A passionate library
advocate\, Erika attends NY Library Advocacy Day annually\, champions the
work of rural public libraries year-round\, and works with libraries to
uphold the Library Bill of Rights\, ALA Core Values of Librarianship\, as
well as Constitutional First and Fourth Amendment rights.
 #LibrariesAreForEveryone \n\nBrian M. Hildreth\, he/him \n\nBrian Hildreth
has been the Southern Tier Library System Executive Director since 2013\,
and worked as a public library director for a decade. He got his start in
libraries in 1997 where he served full time in an academic library
throughout his undergraduate business studies. Library work and family are
his passions. He is particularly drawn to directorship and rural\, small
and mid-sized libraries. His areas of interest are governance\,
leadership\, funding campaigns\, and digital equity. \n\nBrian is a proud
team member of the Trustee Handbook and New Library Director Handbook Book
Club enterprise\, which was formed in 2021. He served on the editorial
teams for both publications’ current updates. In addition to THBC and
DHBC\, he has maintained a monthly eNewsletter for the STLS membership
titled\, Libraries in the Lead since 2020\, and he recently kicked off
a quasi-podcast for his cooperative named\, A Meeting with STLS.
\n\nBrian’s professional mission is to foster and maintain a high-level
of care for all the amazing stakeholders who make up the New York State
library community. \n\nThis public program is offered by the New York State
Library and made possible by federal Library Service and Technology Act
funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services\, which enable the
New York State Library to champion lifelong learning.

SUMMARY:Director Handbook Book Club: The Director-Board Relationship
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\n\nJoin author of the Handbook for New Library
Directors in New York State\, Rebekkah Smith Aldrich\, and friends for this
fun and informative series! Prior to each session\, directors are
encouraged to read the corresponding chapter of the Director Handbook to
the topic for that session. \n\nHave questions for the panelists? Submit
them here.\nDirectors of libraries located in any public library systems in
New York State are welcome to attend.\n\nStrong libraries rely on strong
partnerships. In this Director Handbook Book Club session\, Ron will guide
directors through the core expectations\, boundaries\, and communication
practices that support a healthy\, effective relationship between a library
director and a board of trustees. We will cover the distinct roles of
governance and management\, where responsibilities overlap\, and how to
steer a board toward healthier patterns if expectations have been unclear
or the board has overstepped in the past. The session will also offer
practical strategies for communication between meetings\, trustee
onboarding and education\, board meeting success\, and director reporting
that reduces surprises and builds trust. We will close with a structured
look at director and board evaluation practices that strengthen
accountability\, clarify goals\, and connect leadership performance to
 strategic planning.\n\nTopics include: \n\n\n	Director-board partnership
and shared success\n	Roles and responsibilities: governance versus
management\n	Communication systems and collective authority\n	Trustee
onboarding and continuing education expectations\n	Director and board
evaluation practices aligned with planning and goals\n

SUMMARY:MHLS Trustee Education Series: Multi-Year Financial Planning & Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:\nMulti-year financial planning is a vital tool for library
boards and directors\, particularly those struggling with difficult
financial conditions. It can aid decision-makers to set long-term
priorities and work toward goals\, rather than making choices based only on
what funds are available today. This is important when resources are
limited and can also be beneficial to avoiding future stress. Join Rebekkah
Smith Aldrich\, MHLS Executive Director & Co-Author of the Handbook for
Library Trustees in New York State to review the Office of the State
Comptroller’s multi-year financial planning process and helpful data
sources to help strengthen your library’s financial position and ability
to meet community needs.\n\nThis workshop is part of the MHLS Sustainable
Funding & Trustee Education Series and is intended for MHLS member library
trustees and directors only. Attendance at this event can be applied toward
the NYS Trustee Education Requirements.\n\n \n
