Exploring Your Community Through Census Data: A Step by Step Guide Online

REGISTER HERE

Join us for an informative and hands-on workshop hosted by the Mid-Hudson Library System, where we’ll explore the wealth of data available through the U.S. Census Bureau's feature data portal, data.census.gov.

In this session, you’ll learn how to:

  • Access and navigate the data portal: Discover how to easily find and explore the wide range of variables and datasets available.
  • Create and customize data tables: Search through dozens of topics and variables, correlating demographic data across multiple geographies, from the national to the local level.
  • Download and save your findings: Learn how to download the tables you create and save them for future reference or analysis.
  • Visualize the data: Turn your data tables into informative maps and visual aids to better communicate your findings.
  • Understand Census surveys: Learn about the over 130 surveys conducted by the Census Bureau annually, and gain insight into the questions asked and how this data can be applied.
  • Explore geographic levels: Understand how different geographic levels like block groups, tracts, ZCTAs (Zip Code Tabulation Areas), places, and county subdivisions fit together, and how these levels influence the availability of data.

We will also take a deep dive into data specific to your library's boundaries, showing you how to apply the Census data to your community’s needs.
